How can I convert an image into a PDF file?
By teamnext Editorial Team
Converting image files to PDF can be useful, for example for print preparation or when an image is needed as a page in a multi page PDF document. Depending on the source format and settings, the resulting PDF can be significantly smaller than the original file. This can improve sharing, for example via email.
However, conversion can be lossy. Visible quality loss is possible if the target resolution is lower than the source resolution.
The following sections describe how to save image files as PDF without additional software. The term conversion is only partially accurate because the original files remain unchanged.
Save images as PDF on Windows
Common formats such as JPEG, PNG, and TIFF can be saved as PDF using built in tools.
• Open the image in the Photos app
• Use the three dot menu to select Print, or press Ctrl plus P
• Select Microsoft Print to PDF as the printer, adjust settings if needed, click Print, then choose file name and save location
Save images as PDF on macOS
On macOS, saving as PDF is also possible with built in tools.
• Open the image in Preview
• In File, select Print
• Choose Save as PDF, set a file name, and select a save location
Convert PDFs to image files
The reverse direction is also possible. PDF files can be exported to image formats such as JPEG, PNG, or TIFF. This is typically not available via the default tools on Windows or macOS.
A common option is Adobe Acrobat Pro. Acrobat Reader is not sufficient for this. If conversion is rare, freeware tools may be adequate. There are also online services that convert PDF files to images.
Caution is recommended for browser based services. Uploading files to third party servers can expose both content and metadata, which can be relevant for privacy and compliance.
